LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

The Matanuska Glacier was chosen by Alaska Magazine as #2 of “49 Places to go in the 49th state”. It is the largest glacier in the state that can be easily accessed by car, making it a must-visit destination. The glacier can be accessed with or without a guide. For those looking for more access to the ice, guides can take you for a trek or ice climb (and will share a great deal about the local geography).

We are located at the base of the Sheep Mountain Dall Sheep Reserve, and are fortunate to have ample opportunity for wildlife viewing right on site. Pull out your lawn chair and observe wildlife in their natural habitat. Dall Sheep can best be viewed with binoculars or a spotting scope. We regularly see World Class Rams, as well as ewes with their new lambs in the spring. Each fall we observe black bears during berry season. Moose are likely to stroll through on occasion as well.

Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll or a full day hike to the top of a mountain peak, we've got you covered. We have several nice trails that start at Grand View and lead to spectacular views. The surrounding areas offer a variety of scenery, from hikes into the Dall Sheep reserve that look back at the Matanuska Glacier to creek bed walks into the gorgeous rust colored mountains of Sheep Mountain.

Blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries, oh my! We have easily accessible berry picking when the fruit is in season (typically mid-July to August for raspberries, mid-late August for blueberries and late August into September for cranberries). 

Our unique location places us in the flight path for a number of bird species. Birders know the area world-wide for raptor viewing. At a nearby location, birders view Falcons, Buteos, Accipiters, Eagles, Harriers, Owls, and more!
